Improving the appearance of teeth using porcelain veneer

‘Veneer’ the word, is defined as any material used to cover another material.

In this case porcelain veneers, also known as dental veneers or dental porcelain laminates; are custom manufactured, extremely thin, tooth colored materials that cover the frontal surface of teeth. They can protect the teeth from damage and improve a person’s smile. They can drastically change the physical and visual characteristics of a person’s teeth.

They were invented in 1928 by Charles Pincus, a dentist in California, USA. He used it to change the appearance or an actor’s teeth.

These are made of either composite resin or porcelain. Composites are used for younger people and have to be replaced when they grow up. Laminates, on the other hand, have better aesthetics, performance and resistance to plaque.

Veneers can be used for the following reasons:
  1. Filling the gaps between teeth.
  2. Covering teeth that are worn, chipped or broken.
  3. Discolored teeth.
  4. For misaligned or irregularly shaped teeth.
When porcelain is selected, the dentist takes an impression of the patient’s teeth, from which a mold of the mouth is prepared. This is sent to a dental laboratory, where it is professionally fabricated. The final veneer is placed, evaluated and adjusted for optimal fit and finish.

Porcelain veneers are also stain-resistant, tissue tolerant, look natural and a conservative way to change dental colour, shape and of course the smile.
