Orthodontic braces have been creating beautiful smiles and has served as a confidence booster for many people to smile openly. Although the journey with braces may not be very pleasant but the end results are always worth it. Gone are the days where orthodontic braces only meant the painful “metal mouth” look. Today there are numerous types of braces available to suit the needs and budget of each individual. Some of the most popular choices of braces are:
Traditional Metal Braces
Metal brackets and wires are used over a period of time to move the teeth into its right alignment. This is an effective and fast option to handle even the most severe cases of misalignment. Although it may not be aesthetically pleasing and may cause discomfort to the patient’s gums or cheek tissue, traditional braces are the most affordable among other choices.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic Braces are similar to traditional braces but they blend in better with the teeth as it is made of tooth-colored ceramic material. The brackets and sometimes even the wires are tooth colored for better aesthetics. It is as effective as traditional braces and is more expensive. One should be careful of stains while wearing ceramic braces.
Lingual Braces
Lingual braces are attached to the back of the teeth (tongue side) instead of the front making them virtually invisible. The major drawback of lingual braces is that they are more in contact with the soft tissues of the mouth than traditional braces. This makes them a more uncomfortable option. Not all cases of misalignment can be corrected with lingual braces. Lingual braces are more expensive than traditional and ceramic braces.
Invisalign
Invisaligns are clear, removable retainers used to straighten teeth without the need of brackets, bands, or wires. This treatment uses a series of impressions and plastic trays to guide misaligned teeth in its proper position. It is comfortable to wear and aesthetically appealing. You need to remove Invisalign while eating and drinking to prevent stains. This option is not effective as traditional braces to treat severe cases of misalignment. Invisalign is also the most expensive of all the other options.
