There are no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solutions when it comes to smile makeover. Every patient has their own set of concerns to be addressed to design that perfect smile. These procedures range from dental veneers, tooth whitening, composite restorations to gum recontouring, dental implants, orthodontic treatment and other cosmetic procedures. You can yield the following benefits with a smile makeover procedure:

  •     Improved self-esteem and confidence

Fluorosis and Treatment Options

Fluorosis is a condition that brings about changes in the appearance of the enamel of the tooth. This condition is found generally in children below 8 years of age, as their permanent teeth are still developing. Children above the age group and adults do not get fluorosis.

Why is fluorosis caused?

When fluoride is taken in excess, the cells that form the enamel get damaged. This damage that is caused to the cells leads to a mineralisation disorder of the teeth. This further brings an increase in the porosity of the enamel on the surface of the tooth.

How do children consume excess fluoride?

Fluoride is a kind of a natural mineral that works very well in protecting the tooth enamel. Despite this advantage of fluoride, overexposure to this material can cause fluorosis in babies and children and brings a change in their appearance.

Fluoride is generally consumed through drinking water, fortified foods and toothpaste. It has been established that moderate amount of fluoride works like a preventive measure for dental care however, it is the excess that can cause harm.

What symptoms should parents look out for?

Some common symptoms of fluorosis are:

  • White/black spots on teeth
  • White streaks on teeth
  • Discolouration in the teeth
  • Mottled/Blotchy teeth
  • Pitted teeth

What treatment options are available?

Most children have mild symptoms of fluorosis and the aim of the treatment is to improve the appearance of teeth. The options are:

    • Teeth Bonding

A hard coating of resin is added to the tooth that bonds with the enamel

    • Porcelain Veneers

Crowns and veneers can help control fluorosis

What are Lingual Braces, how do they work and who are they for?

The lingual surface is that side of the teeth facing the tongue and lingual braces are braces similar to normal metal braces but attach to the back of the teeth. Because they are on the inside they are not easily visible from the outside.

They were first developed in 1975 by Craven Kurz and Jim Mulick of the USA and the first patient was treated in 1976.

They consist of small arch wires, metal brackets and elastic bands and work very much like normal braces, but from the inside. They exert a constant pressure that gently but gradually straightens the teeth. It can help in preventing overbite, gaps, crowding and rotated teeth. They have to be custom made as each person’s teeth alignment is different. This is done by first getting an accurate impression or more commonly these days, with a digital scan and the wires and brackets are customised accordingly to comfortably fit behind the teeth.

They, however, are not for everyone; even though they work just as efficiently as normal braces. And the only way to know is consult with an orthodontist.

What are the advantages?

 a. Because they are customized to each person, their comfort and efficiency can be maximised.
 b. They are just as effective and normal metal braces.
 c. As they are behind the teeth, they are virtually invisible and thus do not affect a person’s looks.

 What are the disadvantages?

 a. The time they take for the effects to show up is much, much longer than normal braces.
 b. They can cause considerable discomfort in the beginning.
 c. It may cause the wearer to speak with a lisp, i.e. is to speak imperfectly or being unable to vocalise words properly.
 d. Last, but not the least, they are very expensive.

Lingual braces are a good option, if you must have braces but do not want them to be visible. But, the best way to find out if you should get one is to consult with an orthodontist.

Safety precautions in dental clinics during the Covid-19 crisis

With the Covid19 pandemic not seemingly abating, The Union Health Ministry, India, recently, announced a set of unified guidelines for all dental medicine professionals.

The Indian Dental Association has also, on its website, published a very detailed list of recommended guidelines for its members. Following are some of them:
  1. Provide alcohol-based hand sanitizer, tissues, and non-touching waste disposal containers at entrances and patient waiting rooms.
  2. Reduce Chances of Exposure: This is easier said than done in the dental environment. If you patients have been travelling overseas recently, or, if they are showing symptoms of respiratory infections, then instruct them to contact their physician and reschedule the appointment.
  3. Make it mandatory to take temperature readings of the patients before any procedure.
  4. Insist on full contact details of all the patients.
  5. Install physical barriers to reduce the chances of physical contact between patients.
  6. Clean and disinfect public areas, frequently, with emphasis on chairs, door handles, and bathrooms.
  7. Have patients use a 1% hydrogen peroxide solution to rinse their mouths.
  8. After each patient, sterilize the tools in an autoclave.
  9. Wear surgical masks, face shields, and goggles to protect the eyes, face, and mouth during all procedures.
  10. Always wear a protective gown to prevent the splashing of bodily fluids during procedures. If soiled, remove immediately and perform hand hygiene.
  11. If linen is used, make sure to handle, transfer and process in a safe manner.
For a more complete list, we suggest visiting either the Union Health Ministry, Indian Dental Association,  or Centre for Disease Control websites.

Improving the appearance of teeth using porcelain veneer

‘Veneer’ the word, is defined as any material used to cover another material.

In this case porcelain veneers, also known as dental veneers or dental porcelain laminates; are custom manufactured, extremely thin, tooth colored materials that cover the frontal surface of teeth. They can protect the teeth from damage and improve a person’s smile. They can drastically change the physical and visual characteristics of a person’s teeth.

They were invented in 1928 by Charles Pincus, a dentist in California, USA. He used it to change the appearance or an actor’s teeth.

These are made of either composite resin or porcelain. Composites are used for younger people and have to be replaced when they grow up. Laminates, on the other hand, have better aesthetics, performance and resistance to plaque.

Veneers can be used for the following reasons:
  1. Filling the gaps between teeth.
  2. Covering teeth that are worn, chipped or broken.
  3. Discolored teeth.
  4. For misaligned or irregularly shaped teeth.
When porcelain is selected, the dentist takes an impression of the patient’s teeth, from which a mold of the mouth is prepared. This is sent to a dental laboratory, where it is professionally fabricated. The final veneer is placed, evaluated and adjusted for optimal fit and finish.

Porcelain veneers are also stain-resistant, tissue tolerant, look natural and a conservative way to change dental colour, shape and of course the smile.

Why Choose Composite Veneer For Your Smile Makeover?

Dental veneers have always been the favorite choice of people who have a strong wish to improve their smile. Veneers are thin shells that fit over the front of your existing teeth and help to cover the imperfections of your teeth and improves a smile.

Composite Veneer

Composite veneers are one of the most preferred and less expensive methods. These are very thin shells that are placed over the dental surface where they adapt perfectly to the natural shape of the teeth. These are made from composite resin, essentially the same material used for tooth-colored fillings. They are often applied directly to the teeth. The following are the advantages of choosing composite veneers for your smile makeover.

The advantages of composite veneers

Dental alterations carried out using composite veneers offer the following benefits.
  • Composite veneers are very thin layers that can be placed in a single visit. This does not require any early dental resizing nor lab work.
  • Composite veneers placement is quick, easy and less expensive.
  • Dental reformation is not required.
  • Patients can see immediate results, through a trial before the process starts.
  • Composite material provides excellent quality in the long term.
  • Non-Invasive and painless technique
  • Easy to hide stained teeth and to correct the shape, positioning, and size of the teeth so that they perfectly adapt to all dental situations.
  • It is advised to approach an expert dentist and discuss the best method suitable for you.
