Fluorosis is a condition that brings about changes in the appearance of the enamel of the tooth. This condition is found generally in children below 8 years of age, as their permanent teeth are still developing. Children above the age group and adults do not get fluorosis.
Why is fluorosis caused?
When fluoride is taken in excess, the cells that form the enamel get damaged. This damage that is caused to the cells leads to a mineralisation disorder of the teeth. This further brings an increase in the porosity of the enamel on the surface of the tooth.
How do children consume excess fluoride?
Fluoride is a kind of a natural mineral that works very well in protecting the tooth enamel. Despite this advantage of fluoride, overexposure to this material can cause fluorosis in babies and children and brings a change in their appearance.
Fluoride is generally consumed through drinking water, fortified foods and toothpaste. It has been established that moderate amount of fluoride works like a preventive measure for dental care however, it is the excess that can cause harm.
What symptoms should parents look out for?
Some common symptoms of fluorosis are:
- White/black spots on teeth
- White streaks on teeth
- Discolouration in the teeth
- Mottled/Blotchy teeth
- Pitted teeth
What treatment options are available?
Most children have mild symptoms of fluorosis and the aim of the treatment is to improve the appearance of teeth. The options are:
• Teeth Bonding
A hard coating of resin is added to the tooth that bonds with the enamel
• Porcelain Veneers
Crowns and veneers can help control fluorosis
